Project Technology Highlight: UAntwerp expertise

Within the European project Purple4Life, our team at the University of Antwerp studies how purple phototrophic bacteria can support sustainable, circular bioprocesses. These microbes are metabolically versatile, but their real value will depend on knowing exactly...

Did you know that CoQ10…

Nov 1, 2025 | Curiosity

Coenzyme Q10 is the main antioxidant in cell membranes and lipoproteins protecting them against oxidation and preventing cell death by ferroptosis or atherosclerosis.

Purple bacteria (PPB) are rich in coenzyme Q10 the main antioxidant in cell membranes and an essential component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. The increase in coenzyme Q10 in plasma protects cholesterol vehiculated by lipoproteins against oxidation and thus, protects against atherosclerosis, the accumulation of cholesterol in the arteries.

Coenzyme Q10 is also the main antioxidant in cell membranes protecting them against oxidation and cell death by apoptosis or by ferroptosis. This protection can prevent many diseases and even senescence preventing cell damage.

In the case of aging, high coenzyme Q10 levels in plasma are related with higher physical capacity whereas low levels are related with initial steps in cognitive dysfunction. This effect probably depends on the protection of vascular endothelium.
