Purple4Life Officially Launches with Kick-off Meeting in Mons

May 2, 2025 | Events & Meetings

The European project Purple4Life officially began its journey with a kick-off meeting held on 10–11 June 2025 in the city of Mons, Belgium. Over two days, members of the consortium came together for the first time to initiate this ambitious initiative focused on harnessing Purple Phototrophic Bacteria (PPB) as sustainable ingredients for human food and animal feed.

Hosted at the Rectorate Building of the Université de Mons (UMONS), the coordinating institution, the meeting provided a valuable opportunity to align project strategies, review work packages, and establish the first collaborative actions. Alongside working sessions, the agenda included a cultural activity and an optional lab tour, offering participants a closer look at the facilities where part of the research will take place.

Funded by the Horizon Europe programme through the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), Purple4Life will run for 48 months and brings together universities, research centres, and organisations from the biotechnology and agri-food sectors across Europe. The project aims to promote a transition toward more sustainable food systems by leveraging the biotechnological potential of PPB and fostering a circular bioeconomy.

This first meeting has reinforced the consortium’s shared commitment to addressing the scientific, societal, and environmental challenges at the heart of Purple4Life, setting a strong foundation for the years ahead.
