Project Technology Highlight: Nofima’s Expertise in Advancing Sustainable Food Systems in Practice

Apr 27, 2026 | Project information

What does it really take to build more sustainable food systems, not just in theory, but in practice?

This is one of the key questions driving the work of Nofima, an European institute specialising in applied research across the entire food value chain.

From raw material production to consumer behaviour, Nofima’s approach is rooted in connecting science with real-world application. Their work focuses on improving how food is produced, processed, and consumed, always with an emphasis on efficiency, sustainability, and long-term impact.

Within the Purple4Life project, this perspective is particularly relevant. Developing innovative food and feed solutions, such as those based on purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB), requires not only technological advances, but also a deep understanding of how these solutions fit into existing systems.

This is where Nofima’s expertise becomes especially valuable. Their experience in areas such as aquaculture, food innovation, and product development helps ensure that new approaches are not only technically viable, but also scalable and aligned with industry needs. Their work focuses on generating scientific evidence for practical applications in aquaculture and feed innovation, helping to evaluate how these innovative feed ingredients may support fish performance, health, product quality, and more sustainable aquaculture systems.

Ultimately, making food systems more sustainable is not about a single solution, but about integrating multiple perspectives: from science and industry to society.
