The European project Purple4Life officially launched with its first in-person meeting on June 10–11, 2025, at the University of Mons (UMONS) in Belgium. This kick off event brought together representatives from the 12 participating institutions across seven European countries, setting the stage for four years of collaborative research and innovation.
The meeting focused on aligning strategies, reviewing work packages, and defining initial joint actions. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the laboratories where key parts of the research will be conducted.
Purple4Life explores the potential of purple bacteria to upcycle industrial co-products and safely produce valuable compounds such as coenzyme Q10 and carotenoids. The project will assess the nutritional, environmental, and social impacts of these applications, while promoting their long-term sustainability and public acceptance.
The kick off reinforced the collective commitment of all partners to address the scientific, societal, and environmental challenges at the heart of the project.
Funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) under the Horizon Europe programme, Purple4Life is coordinated by the Department of Proteomics and Microbiology at UMONS, with support from the Cellule Europe.
